Swallows – Faster than sound
… because they were busy tending to their offspring, and the little ones were hungry. The nest hung right by the entrance to the Kaiserstuhl Nature Center, and the two parents flew over the heads of waiting visitors every minute. A lively bunch, those chicks—though, unfortunately, on that cloudy day, they were tucked deep in the shadows.
The portraits showing them with a captured insect were taken right at the riding stable where we stayed for the first week, while I was editing photos. With the window open and my camera on the table beside me, the pair would fly back and forth, tending to their young in the nest beneath the pergola roof. Here, too, one would always wait—chattering away on the top rail of the gate right outside the window—until the other had finished its work at the nest, and then they would fly off together again. I botched the shots of them in flight; I still need some practice there.
